Business Meeting, Report of the Proceedings

Murat Köksalan chaired the meeting (The number of members of the Society attending the meeting was about 60).

Domain and Membership

Prof. Murat Köksalan, the President of the Society, informed the participants about the domain of the society. He mentioned that the Society’s website was redesigned and the website as well as the database have been migrated to a cloud-based hosting service, Gandi. He presented website statistics, number of sessions by country for the period between January, 2017 and June, 2017 that are obtained through Google Analytics. Prof. Murat Köksalan mentioned that there are 2402 members from 96 countries as of June 2017. The members of the Society were asked to keep their e-mail addresses up-to-date and contact the secretary for changes at He informed that the Society has no membership fees and invited nonmember participants to become members of the Society at

Electronic Discussion List and LinkedIn Group

Prof. Murat Köksalan mentioned that the discussion list is independent from the membership and requires a separate application to join. He informed that Society’s electronic discussion list is currently at He thanked University of Jyväskylä for continuing to host the discussion list for many years. He informed that they are working on migrating the list to a hosting company and taking action for making members who are not in the list to become members of the list as well. Prof. Murat Köksalan told that there are presently 334 members of LinkedIn Group of the Society which is only open to the members of the Society. He invited the members to join the group at for sharing information including calls for conferences, book chapters, and special issues of journals, various announcements, and recent works.

The on-going Conference and MCDM 2017 Special Issues

Prof. Murat Köksalan informed about the on-going conference and reported the number of participants by country.  He opened a discussion on content suggestions for the next conferences. There was suggestions on organizing panels and tutorials on specific topics preferably not parallel with other sessions. Another suggestion was to organize workshops especially to attract the industry-oriented people. It was also discussed whether to organize these workshops before or after the conference but one of the members pointed out that the conference now covers almost one week, longer than the other conferences hence it was not a good idea to include a workshop before or after the conference. It was also suggested to organize interactive sessions in addition to theoretical ones. One of the members pointed out that a part of the sessions could be dedicated to the industrial applications. One other suggestion is to investigate for other ideas applied in other organizations and conferences.  A substantial number of participants indicated interest on tutorials presented on the Sunday just before the conference.  Prof. Köksalan said that this idea and other content related ideas would be conveyed to organizers of future conferences and pursued. He encouraged the participants to submit their papers that were presented at MCDM2017 but also noted that the special issues are not limited to talks given MCDM2017.  He mentioned that detailed Call for Papers for these special issues could be found at the web site of the current conference:

The next MCDM conference

Prof. Murat Köksalan informed that the 25th International Conference on MCDM will be held in Istanbul, Turkey between June 17 and June 21, 2019 (with a welcome reception on 16th). He mentioned that the General Chair will be İlker Topçu and the co-chairs will be Özgür Kabak and Özay Özaydın.

Officers of the Society

Prof. Murat Köksalan introduced the officers of the Society and informed about the contact information for each officer.

Elections related to four open positions in the Executive Committee

Prof. Murat Köksalan informed that four officers of the executive committee were also finishing their terms in MCDM2015 (Matthias Ehrgott, Kathrin Klamroth, Pekka Korhonen, Hirotaka Nakayama). There are nine candidates for the four vacancies in the Executive Committee (in alphabetical order):

Prof. Murat Köksalan informed that all those who become members by July 31, 2017 can vote. The voting will be an electronic approval voting. The voting period will start on September 8, 2017 and end on September 22, 2017. Details will be provided with voting invitation by email. Prof. Murat Köksalan asked the members to make sure their membership e-mail address is correct.


Prof. Murat Köksalan informed that MCDM Society Awards will be given at the banquet and award talks will be given on Friday morning. He mentioned that MCDM Doctoral Dissertation Award will also be given at the banquet. He also informed that there were unfortunately no submissions for the Wiley Practice Prize.

MCDA/M Summer School

Prof. Murat Köksalan informed that the 13th MCDA/M Summer School 2018 will be organized in Chania, Greece from July 23rd to August 3rd, 2018 that could be followed at the webpage, He introduced the organizing committee: Constantin Zopounidis (Organizing Chair) and Michael Doumpos. Prof. Murat Köksalan informed about the participation fee and application process that will start on September 1, 2017 and end on December 30, 2017. The capacity is limited to approximately 50 participants. He noted that the participation fee includes attendance to the summer school, documents, lunches, dinners and a social activity. He told that summer schools are great opportunities, hence all members are encouraged to publicize, encourage, and fund their students.  He also mentioned that the summer schools will be tried to be organized every two years (rather than every three years) from now on.

Electronic Newsletter of the Society

Prof. Murat Köksalan mentioned Johannes Siebert (Editor), Lucie Galand, Jana Krejčí, Salvatore Corrente, Sandra Huber work on preparing and publishing the newsletter. The Electronic Newsletter of the International Society on MCDM is published twice a year, and made available to all members of the Society. Prof. Murat Köksalan informed about the submission deadlines for February and September issues. He mentioned that contributions are appreciated and can be sent to the editor any time at All members are encouraged to send call for papers early enough to allow for preparations and send any content suggestions or support proposals to the editor. 

Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis

Theodor Stewart, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, reported that 3 issues, around 20 papers, per annum are published whereas more than 80 submissions are received. Based on his report, Prof. Murat Köksalan noted that Scopus Cite Score and rank (in the Strategy and Management Category) have improved. The journal has now been listed in Web of Science Emerging Sources Citation Index but the impact factor has not been calculated yet. All initiatives on special issues are encouraged.
