The next conference of the International Society on MCDM will be organized in Málaga, Spain on June 17-21, 2013.

To the memory of Professor Yoshikazu Sawaragi (19 December, 1916 -- 22 October, 2011). By Prof. Hirotaka Nakayama (Konan University).

It is deeply sad for me to inform the community of MCDM that Professor Yoshikazu Sawaragi passed away at the age of 94 in Kyoto, Japan, 22 October, 2011. He organized 7-th International Conference on Multiple Criteria Decision Making, Kyoto, 1986. His photograph can be seen in the book Multiple Criteria Decision Making From Early History to the 21st Century , by Koksalan, Wallenius and Zionts, World Scientific, 2011 (p.67).

He made tremendous contributions to the field of control engineering and system sciences, in particular as a worldwide distinguished leader (e.g., IFAC President from 1978 to 1981, IFAC advisor since 1984, IFAC fellow in 2005, President of Association of Automatic Control Engineers, Japan (presently, Institute of Systems, Control and Information Engineers) from 1971 to 1976, President of Society of Instrument of Control Engineers from 1987 to 1989; In 1969 he became Member of Science Council of Japan).

He became a full professor of Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University in 1950. He played a major role to launch a new Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University in 1959 to educate students in new areas of applied mathematics, control theory, computer, operations research, and applied physics. After the retirement of Kyoto University, he established the Japan Institute of Systems Research (JISR) in 1980 to play a role as a bridge between academia and industry. Especially, he started a joint program between JISR and IIASA in 1987 on the Development of interactive modeling and decision support systems.

For his contributions in Systems and Control Engineering, he received from the Japanese Government the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1980, and the Second Class Order of Sacred Treasure in 1988. Furthermore, he received Kyoto Prefecture Culture Achievement Award in 1994.

He loved the Japanese word shinayaka which literally means soft and hard (or, flexible and robust). There is no English word corresponding to this self-contradictory word at a glance. The idea of shinayaka seems to be originated from the oriental (in particular, Japanese) philosophy. Non-Japanese people can guess the meaning from an allegory that branches of willow are never broken even by strong wind and just swing with it. He advocated that systems engineering should be shinayaka. To this end, he insisted the importance of harmonized collaboration of human beings and computers. He kept a close observation on human beings. He named his last institute (NPO) Shinayaka Systems Engineering. MCDM should play an important role along this approach.

Members directory - Members with invalid email address

We have found out a number of members in the directory of the Society who do not have an email address or have an invalid one. It is vital for all members to have a valid email address. This enables one to vote in the elections, or to receive information from the Society (like the newsletter or calls for papers for the MCDM conferences). Please, click here to view the list of members with invalid email address. If you are in the list, or you happen to know someone who is in the list, please contact the secretary of the Society and let him know the correct email address.

MCDM Numerical Instances Library

A new section, MCDMlib, has been added to our webpage. MCDMlib is a collection of test data sets for a variety of Multiobjective optimization problems. The collection was created in 1998. Unfortunately, the original MCDMlib was closed in 2007 and deleted by the host without archiving the website. Do not refer any longer the old URL (www.univ-valenciennes.fr/ROAD/MCDM/) which is definitively dead. Due to the important number of requests, the MCDMlib is coming back (July 28, 2010), and managed by Prof. Xavier Gandibleux. The right URL to save in your bookmark and to refer is: http://www.mcdmsociety.org/MCDMlib.html.

New INFORMS Section on MCDM

The first business meeting of the INFORMS Section on MCDM has been held in Austin. The presentation and minutes of the business meeting can be found at the section's Web site. With this meeting, the establishment of the MCDM section was completed. The elected officers for the year 2011 were Murat Köksalan (president), Jyrki Wallenius (vice President) and Esma Gel (secretary/treasurer). Besides, the elected board members are Stan Zionts (3-year term), Jim Dyer (3-year term), Harold Benson (2-year term), Hannele Wallenius (2-year term), Mark Karwan (1-year term) and Larry Seiford (1-year term).

The Section enjoyed an enrollment of over 100 members (124 as of November 23, 2010) in a short period of time. To become a member, visit: https://online.informs.org/informsssa/informsmempubssarenew.choose?p_cust_id=1234.

One of the section's main goals for 2011 is to make a grand presence at the INFORMS conference in Charlotte, NC, November 13-16, 2011. They have already agreed with INFORMS to sponsor an MCDM cluster and Prof. Murat Köksalan agreed to act as the cluster chair. They would like to have a large number of high quality sessions in this cluster. Please inform Prof. Köksalan directly if you are interested in organizing a session or presenting a paper in one of the sessions of this cluster. Besides, they are also discussing with the organizers to organize tutorials on MCDM.
